Periodontal Disease - Cigarette Smoking Increases Risk
There are two ways to chew gum. One is to hold it between your teeth, the other is to chew it out of your mouth. If you have bad breath, it's possible that you're chewing your gum, producing bad-smelling saliva, instead of sucking on your toothbrush. As you chew, bacteria from your mouth goes into your throat. This will cause you to breathe through your mouth rather than your nose.
Periodontal disease (PAD) is an inflammation of gums and dental attachments that support teeth. This results in periodontal pockets that contain infected material, which grows into bone. Periodontal disease (PAD) can lead to other problems, such as periodontitis (a severe gum infection), loosening of teeth, and tooth loss. The presence of bacteria on the teeth and gums gives rise to symptoms such as swelling, redness, irritation, tenderness, or a gritty taste, which change as the disease progresses. Gum disease is the number one reason for tooth loss in the United States.
Cigarette smoking is one of the most common causes of mouth soreness, and many people do not realize that smoking can lead to these conditions. Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes dry out the tissues in the mouth. This causes smoking-related mouth soreness. Other tobacco products, such as pipes and cigar-shaped tobacco likerollers, can also lead to this problem.
In addition to mouth soreness, tartar builds up on teeth, just as plaque does in other areas of the body. The purpose of tartar is to act as a protective layer against foreign particles that might damage the gums. Teeth that are exposed to plaque also show signs of yellow and unhealthy discoloration, similar to the teeth of someone with advanced age-related tooth discoloration. Tissue death and inflammation around the gumline are another result of this condition.
The risk of getting gingivitis and periodontitis increases with smoking. The reason is that smoking reduces saliva production, which inhibits the natural bioreactivity (reaction) between the tooth and plaque. Brushing with a soft bristled toothbrush more than twice a day is the best prevention against this condition. If you already have periodontitis, brushing more than twice a day is especially important. When you do brush, flossing should be done daily as well. It is also important to visit your dentist regularly.
Cigarette smoking is an easy way to develop gum disease. If you smoke, now is the time to stop. You can reduce your risk of developing these diseases by simply not smoking.
