Periodontal Disease and Gum Infections - Helpful Tips You Can Use to Prevent This Type of Gum Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammation of the tissue that hold the teeth together. It is usually caused by bad oral hygiene habits that let plaque build up on the teeth, causing a sticky yellowish film of plaque to develop on them and harden into tartar. In more advanced stages, untreated periodontitis can cause sore, inflamed gums; painful gums rubbing against teeth; and tooth loss.

Most people brush their teeth several times a day, with toothpaste designed to remove surface plaque. But even though brushing is a good start, most dentists agree that regular brushing is only the first step in fighting plaque. Once plaque has accumulated on the teeth, or on the gums, it takes a special kind of bacterium to break it down. Bacteria need food - they break down tartar by feeding on it.

Bacteria's diet is basically protein, so any time you have a build-up of tartar on your teeth or in your gums, you're encouraging the growth of unhealthy bacteria. And the longer the buildup remains, the harder it is to dislodge the plaque. So your only option is to dislodge and eliminate the plaque, so it doesn't grow back.

Periodontitis and gingivitis both are characterized by gum inflammation of gums. And they both typically respond to treatment with antibiotics. However, there are many cases where neither is the problem, in which case it is important to seek the advice of a dentist for a more aggressive treatment plan. This might mean a visit to the dentist for a professional cleaning and an analysis of your dental situation.

Some periodontologists and gums specialists offer their own unique types of preventive care. There are some very useful tips you can follow to help prevent or reduce the likelihood of developing either condition. Regular brushing with a toothbrush that is especially made for the purpose of cleaning the inside of your mouth is helpful. Brushing removes the food that might not be removed completely by brushing alone. Food left in between teeth, on the backs of your gums or other areas can harbor harmful bacteria that contribute to periodontitis.

Other helpful tips include flossing at least once a day, although this doesn't always mean with each tooth. Flossing your entire mouth is necessary, since bacteria hide in spaces between the teeth, but you can also buy floss in different types. Try to go back to the basic flossing technique from when you were a child: gently stretch the gums around the tooth and hold them in your hand until all of the floss has been removed. After you're done, be sure to brush your teeth again and use a good mouthwash that kills plaque and is designed to keep your gums healthy.
