Retro Candy - Memories of Youth
If retro candy isn't really your thing, there's plenty of fun options out there. In fact, retro candy isn't really retro: it's more than that! Retro candy selection is much more than that: it's a group of sweet-smelling, vintage candy favorites which can take you right back through the late 20th Century, reminding you of the things you were doing and the people you once were, while leaving you with wonderful memories that no other souvenir can (ouch... you can't touch).
But first... what is a retro candy? Well, that depends on who you ask. What do retro candy store clerk, candy recipes and gumball machines have in common? They're all candy for adults, with a strong nostalgic flavor. And they all come from a candy store which, for one reason or another, decided to market them exclusively as sweets rather than as novelties (or, worse yet, as drugs).
Candy from a candy store isn't just straight sugar candy. The wafers and luscious topping are thick, sugary, and have usually been treated with preservatives. It might be as simple as a fat-free or low-fat tootsie roll, or as complex as a gumball machine with an authentic gumball flavor. What makes them retro, however, is the quality of the candy (and the quality of the candy store, which is probably the most important factor in the nostalgic experience).
When you're out shopping for tootsie roll, try to find a store that sells a lot of them, and a good supply. And remember to ask how old the candy is. "aged" in this context means "fondant". Fondant has a tendency to fall off and shred when it's cold. There's nothing wrong with an old tootsie roll if you can get it. Just make sure to preserve it carefully until your next opportunity to enjoy its sweetness.
Do you remember candy from your childhood? How about candy from your friends' houses? Or better yet, candy from back when you attended school? Back then, everyone had their own candy stash, and if you went out you could count on getting some. These days, we tend to spend our money on things like plasma TVs and HDTVs instead of individual candy bars. But if you got a stash of retro candy, you can count on getting some, and maybe even reselling some to others.
Today's tootsie roll seems to be less a candy treat than a novelty item. But we seem to enjoy retro candy more than we did in years gone by. Perhaps it has something to do with the nostalgic memories that accompany us as we re-visit a bit of our childhood. Or perhaps it's all to do with the fact that candy, particularly tootsie roll candy, is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce (if you have a tootsie roll cutter).
The variety of retro candy to choose from is endless. You can get retro candy in virtually any flavor from Smirnoff Ice to Hostess to Krackel's Coffee and Cold Tea. There are even some totsies rolls that resemble movie starlets... such as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable or Arnold Schwarzenegger. And there's something for everyone.
The market for retro candy is strong. In fact, a quick online search will yield millions of results, many of which you'd never see listed in the New York Times. It seems as though retro candy is going to continue to grow in popularity. We may never see a decline in retro candy. In fact, I'm not even sure how to classify it!
As an item retro candy has quite a following. I've been to several parties where totsie roll holders have been handed out as party favors. And these tootsie roll holders don't just make great party favors, they also make great souvenirs! A tootsie roll holder can be displayed on your refrigerator or desk and serve as a reminder of a wonderful trip, a family reunion or a night at a friends house. It will remind you of times gone by, especially when those memories are filled with candy!
My favorite retro candy is the tootsie roll. Not only does it go great as a souvenir, it is also very affordable. I'm not sure if it was the sugar coating or just plain old nostalgia that led me to give it a try, but when I gave my friend a tootsie roll with the kids I got a nice compliment. When I told my wife I had a tootsie roll from when I was a kid she was actually excited, she had never heard of retro candy before and asked me what I had in mind.
There's a good chance you have some of your own childhood sweets to share, whether it be candy or other collectibles. Maybe you even have a box full of old candy burns or lollipops that you no longer use. Whatever your favorites are, if you love them, you should consider having a little bit of nostalgia added to your life with some retro candy.
