Retro Candy Shop in York County

The retro candy industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade and has become an internationally recognized candy art form. In fact, the International Association of Retro Candy Appraisers (IARCA) awards retro candy makers with their coveted Professional Candy Maker of the Year award. But what does it take to become a retro candy maker? And what's so special about retro candy?

"When we first opened our candy store back in 1993, we didn't even know that was a good name. We thought it was funny, and then people just started coming by for weeks. It just kept growing. When we first started out, we only sold German chocolate, but now we have candy store in sixty countries! We're retro candy store in South Slope, filled with amazing vintage sweet treats.

"We have something for everyone here. If you like sugary sweets, we have a selection of sugar free gumballs and chocolates, and if you prefer nutty candy, we've got that too!" says receptionist April. This may be a misconception because many retro candy shops sell both sweets and nuts. In fact, most candy stores do. But this kind of store carries only sweets - no nuts or chocolate here.

April explains that the typical retro candy store has a variety of candy from different eras. Candy from the fifties, the sixties, the seventies, the eighties, and more. Back then, candy was considered a social expression, with handmade, colorful, and often humorous packaging. These treats get passed down from generation to generation. In a retro candy store, you will find boxes containing candy from all over the world, each a souvenir from a different holiday event.

April's favorite - "Fruity Limbo" from the mid-eighties. We're not sure why she picked this one - maybe it's all the spices! She loves this candy because it reminds her of childhood, when there were no television sets, computers, or cell phones. Now, she's happy to have this reminder of childhood available to her in her own candy shop, and to share with her family and friends.
