The Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate
Chocolate is a delicious preparation of ground and roasted cocoa powder, sweetened with sugar, that's made in the shape of a dense liquid, usually in a brick, and also can also be used as an ingredient in other dishes. The flavor of chocolate varies by region: in certain regions of South America, particularly the ones near the equator, cocoa is harvested more frequently than at other times. But most chocolate in the US comes from Brazil. It is the well-known American chocolate that's most familiar to us; chocolates from all over the world have their place in our hearts, but American chocolate is still the best seller, with bars from all over the world sold in every grocery and candy shop on the planet.
It's easy to understand the health benefits of chocolate: it's full of antioxidants, iron, Vitamin B12, and other nutrients that give it many positive effects on our health. But there are also some things that we should watch out for when eating chocolate, especially dark chocolate, one of the highest concentrations of these flavonoids in nature. This is the chocolate that's most popular in chocolate bars, because it contains twice the amount of these flavonoids than do other kinds of chocolate. But the problem with this type of chocolate, called "heath" chocolate, is that it has very little cocoa in it, so it tends to have very little flavonoid concentration compared to the other varieties. While both varieties of chocolate have health benefits, heath chocolate is significantly healthier because it has much less cocoa in it and so gets its flavonoids from somewhere else.
Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that have been linked with lowering of plaque in arteries (which could help prevent atherosclerosis, a condition that's associated with high cholesterol and blood pressure). There's also evidence that it could help you with cognitive impairment, another manifestation of aging that affects your thinking and your memory. Flavonols, found in grape skins and seeds, and peanuts, are known to have similar effects on cognitive function as dark chocolate, but they're much lower in fat. A study published in Science Daily shows that consuming one ounce of hot chocolate with three tablespoons of skim milk could help improve blood flow to the brain. If this method could be duplicated in a controlled situation, it may have significant health benefits.
Now, it's clear that eating chocolate may have some health benefits, and it may even help you feel good. But, eating chocolate alone may not be enough to prevent you from developing other health problems or cognitive decline later in life. In order to preserve your memory and brain function, it's important to maintain a healthy diet full of unprocessed plant-based foods, such as vegetables and fruits. You should also make sure to get plenty of exercise, do some form of exercise every day, and try to live a healthy lifestyle overall. It may seem like a lot of work, but doing these things on a daily basis will pay off in the end, when you can look back and enjoy the great memories that you had as a child without having to worry about having brain damage or various health problems.
The health benefits of dark chocolate are likely derived from the presence of flavonols. These antioxidants seem to have antioxidant and antiviral activity. Flavonols also seem to reduce the absorption of sugar into the body, something that many scientists believe is an important factor in maintaining good cardiovascular health. In addition, flavonols appear to have some anti-cancer activity, possibly due to their ability to block the formation of the protein amyloid. Amyloid plaques found in several types of cancer can cause severe damage to the brain and other organs.
There's a lot of research out there on all types of health claims related to chocolate. For now, it's important to remember that while cocoa beans contain high amounts of nutrients, including antioxidants and flavonols, chocolate bars have lots of sugar and other ingredients in them, and those ingredients are likely to have negative health consequences. That being said, if you're a health-conscious individual, then you should probably include chocolate bars in your diet. They're delicious and high in nutritional value!
