The History of Kit Kat - From Where Does it Come From?
In our American English context, Kit Kat has come to mean chocolate bars, although its roots actually come from another place entirely. Back in the days of the Dutch, "kat" could mean any number of things. Back in those days, "kat" also meant sweet potatoes, and some cultures associated sweet potatoes with cheese, so it was natural that "kat" would come to be associated with chocolate.
Kit Kat did not originally refer to chocolate, only to wafers. As far back as the late 1700s, a Kit Kat referred to Belgian wafers made from meat. (At that time, however, "kat" was commonly used to refer to any flat food, such as a pastry, and "wafers" had no specific meaning beyond the fact that they were delicious.)
The flat, thin Belgian wafers that we know today are not related to the chocolate that we love so much today. Instead, these wafers were created to replace another type of flat food - coffee. When people found that coffee was expensive, they turned to cheaper alternatives, such as baking wafers that were then covered in chocolate or sugar. The flat wafer became a favorite in places like America, and the confectionary item began to enjoy worldwide popularity.
Kit Kat became a favorite in many different countries. When England became a Republic in the Middle Ages, King Charles II banned all candy bars from being imported into the country. Instead, he decreed that all citizens of England could have two "pancake-sized" bars of cheese that could be taken with them anywhere. This became the custom for centuries to many children all over Europe. It remained popular until the introduction of more expensive foods, such as meats.
The story of Kit Kat makes a great example of how a candy bar can grow to symbolize more than just sweet tastes. The love of eating this particular candy bar grew so that it became synonymous with love and friendship. As time went on, the unwrapping of Kit Kat candy bars became an important tradition. Children would go to the market in Belgium and unwrap the bulk bars of candy to show their friends. The candy was then eaten by the friends as part of their meal, or given as a gift.
The history of Kit Kat candy bars is interesting. They started out as humble bars of chocolate that were eaten by children. As time went on, the candy became associated with love and friendship worldwide. Over the years, the candy has become more than just a treat for kids; it has also been used as a symbol of friendship and affection.
