The Many Uses Of Mint
Mint is a sweet, aromatic, citrus-sour plant with dark green leaves and red fruit. It is a native to India and Sri Lanka. This small, fleshy plant is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. The difference between species is unclear; however, it is estimated that only 13 to 24 authentic species remain. Hybridization has occurred naturally where some varieties range overlap with other similar species. Most of the well-known hybrid varieties are now from tropical and subtropical areas of South and Central America, especially near the Southern tip of Honduras and Belize.
Mint and Rosemary are related and grow in similar habitats, growing up to about one foot tall. Mint is often planted to deter aphids, which love to dine on its flowers. Mint and Rosemary can be planted as separate plants, though mixed marjoram, peppermint, and Rosemary flowers make attractive border beds. In addition to eating the flowers, mint and Rosemary are used as a spice in cooking. Rosemary is well known as an herbal remedy for menstrual cramps, stomachache, coughs, bronchitis, and upset stomachs. Mint tea, mint tinctures, and extracts, and oil made from mint are used as topical antiseptic treatments for wounds, skin irritations, and oral infections.
Cooking, especially garlic and onion, makes excellent use of mint-family herbs. When boiled, fresh mint leaves make a light, crisp condiment with plenty of flavor. Cooked mint leaves can be sprinkled on foods or eaten whole, or added to vinaigrette dressings and spreads for a zesty flavor. They can also be used in the form of a condiment for sandwiches.
Fresh mint leaves can be chewed to freshen breath, and there is evidence that they may improve digestion. Chewing on fresh mint leaves also relieves stomach aches, and assists in relieving some of the symptoms of dysentery. Mint is often used in candy, especially in children's chew toys and chewing gum. Mint is an active ingredient in many gums, and its flavorful taste complements many candies. Mint has also been used as a cough remedy by sufferers of sore throats, and it may help relieve congestion by causing the mucus to harden.
Fresh mint leaves can be added to a wide range of cocktails, and they're delightful additions to hot and cold drinks. Lemon balm is made by combining lemon juice and dried fresh thyme leaves; the two ingredients should be combined in a small pot and steeped for 30 minutes. Strain the mixture and dry the leaves before straining the mixture into a bottle. This homemade lemon balm makes an excellent alternative to the store-bought type. Other popular combinations include lemon balm and marigold tea or marjoram tea.
Dried mint leaves make an excellent alternative to plastic bags when using them to store herbs. Mint leaves keep for weeks in a cool, dark place, and they retain their freshness for up to six months after they are plucked from the plant. When they are stored in a sealed plastic bag, the leaves will lose all of their health benefits.
