The Uncomplicated History of Kit Kat

Kit Kat bars have been around since Japan opened its first chocolate factory in 1834. When the chocolate industry began there were very few people in Japan who knew anything about candy making. Today, nearly a third of Japan's chocolate production comes from factories that create candy bars. Kit Kat has become a world famous candy that can be found in almost any place where chocolate is sold.

Kit Kat

The story of how the Kit Kat was transformed from an obscure chocolate drink into a worldwide phenomenon is complicated and interesting. The company that produced Kit Kat initially was run by a Japanese family. The couple used their own company credit to start their business and used their home as their factory. While this may seem odd, at the time it worked out fine, especially with favorable tax laws in Japan.

In order to gain market share, the founders added several marketing tricks to their Kit Kat candies, such as sending chocolate bars through the post, which made it easy for consumers in other countries to buy. It also made it easier to introduce new flavors by launching an entire line of them. As the company grew, so did their reputation and the number of flavors they had on the candy bar. The first bar only had two flavors: chocolate and strawberry.

As the popularity of Kit Kat spread, it started to sell other products, such as wafers, in different flavors. It seems that the wafers started out as chocolate and strawberry and became a hit when changed to wafer cereal. Later, the company tried to combine both flavors and expanded on it with flavors of fruit and yogurt. They even added flavors of ice cream to their Kit Kat wafers. The wafers are still tasty, despite the different combinations the company has tried. The wafers, however, have lost their appeal to younger customers.

One day, someone noticed that the wafer mix included a substantial amount of sugar. Because Kit Kat is intended for children, this was a serious offense. The makers quickly pulled the combination, replacing the sugar with another sweetener. However, the damage was already done; kids were no longer buying chocolate wafers. Kids are more sophisticated these days and they would never eat a wafer that tasted like a sweetener.

The other major Kit Kat ingredient that changed the way the wafer became known as one of the world's most delicious desserts is the topping of the candy bar. Prior to the change, topping the bar with nuts or raisins just made it look like a dessert. The change, however, made the wafer taste more like a bar of chocolate. Candy bars do not really have a flavor of their own, so it is easy to overdo the raisins. Changing the topping allowed Kit Kat manufacturers to add another layer of rich chocolate flavor to their candy bar.
