Toy Candy History

Clear toy candy, sometimes called "lollipops" is an old fashioned confectionery which originally originated in Germany, England & Scotland. It's particularly fond at Christmas and Easter. The original hard candy was created in numerous shapes, usually in several fanciful shapes. Usually the candy is colored in bright shades, usually bright red, yellow and green.

The tradition of lollipops had its roots in Germany. The English translation of the word "lollipops" is "tea leaves". Candy lollipops first became popular in Great Britain, from where it spread to America and Australia. Candy lollipops first started out as tea leaves coated in fruit flavored sweeteners. Today, candy lollipops are primarily sugar free.

The first candy store opened in 18 42 at the White Walk in London. After a few years, the trend for candies began to move from street corners to a separate room in a shopping mall. The giant candy stores popped up in cities all over the United States and Canada. The British were not behind and began to have their own candy store which was called the Candy Shop.

The American equivalent of a candy store was opened in New York in 18 53. Its sister establishment in San Francisco called the Folsom Street Treats became the largest candy store in the world. Both stores soon rivaled the major gumbo and ice cream giants. Today, many Americans still love to shop for lollipops or candy.

Losing the battle to gumbo and ice cream giants, the lollipops industry began to sell largely unhealthy sweet treats. In addition, manufacturers took to adding flavorings to their candy mixes. These additives became so common that the industry was soon considered as just another food item. Americans turned against candy and the lollipops that came with it. They were not the same thing after all. But the war between the candy manufacturers and the general population was not over.

In today's world, candy may be viewed as a comfort food. A candy store is often visited by young people on Halloween. On this day, candy hounds scour malls, business districts, and grocery stores looking for the best deals on sweets. People visit these candy stores to satisfy their sweet tooth and to have fun with friends and family. So, for people looking for a special treat on this special day, the sweet treat of candy may be just what they are looking for.
