Treating Eczema With Licorice
Licorice comes from the plant Glycyrrhiza Glabra, a composite member of the mint family Labiatae). Licorice has a distinctive bitter taste, which comes from its glycyrrhizin (oil) content. It has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal treatment for stomach ache, gastric distress, flatulence and nervous disorders. Today it is widely used as an artificial sweetener in candy stores, chewing gum, chewing balls, lip gloss and as a therapeutic treatment for nausea, indigestion and food allergies.
Licorice, which also goes by the names of sweeter apple, sweet apple, ginger apple and Indian apple, is native to central Europe and Asia. Licorice root was often used as a treatment for skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Modern research has shown that licorice can help to treat skin diseases by improving the body's immune system response. It has been shown to slow down the process of skin aging. Some studies have even shown that licorice root may help to protect against skin cancer. It has also been found to reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (an inflammation of the nose).
Research in Germany has shown that licorice root extract can provide relief from acid reflux disease. Standard treatment for this condition includes antacids such as H2 receptor antagonists (H2 blocker). Another drug, omeprazole (Diflucan), is taken in conjunction with standard treatments. Although it has been found that both drugs improve the effectiveness of the standard treatment, there have been reports of serious side effects including dizziness, nausea, bleeding and stomach upset.
Some of the possible side effects of licorice may include low blood pressure and high blood sugar levels. This is attributed to the diosgenin contained in licorice root. This substance can cause a drop in blood sugar levels which can result in low energy levels and confusion. Other side effects may include liver damage and abnormal behavior in small children.
Clinical trials in Japan have shown that licorice root extracts can prevent or reduce acid reflux by more than sixty percent. Japanese researchers have also determined that licorice root can slow down the progression of esophageal cancer. In two separate studies, participants who took three separate triphala (licorice) capsules twice daily had a decrease in esophageal cancer compared to those who took a placebo. Further studies are still ongoing.
The research on licorice root extract is a lot more preliminary than concrete. However, the results have been promising thus far. The Japanese scientists claim that further studies should be conducted in order to determine the safety of licorice for use as a treatment for common illnesses like eczema. A two-week study is currently underway.
