What Is a Wertheimer Original Caramel?
The origin of Caramels is traced back to the year 8th century, when the Vikings discovered North America by going North from Scandinavia. From there they went to the coast and islands of Espirito Santo and began the Caramel trade with the native tribes and to natives of Caribbean. In most cases, these werther Original candies are made in two different ways. The first way to make the candies is to use a combination of sugar, water, and heat, combined with baking soda, and then to add various herbal essences, mostly lemon, to help ward off insects.
The other method to make the werther Original candy is to use a combination of eggs whites, butter, water, sugar, vanilla, and various spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Many times whole cloves of garlic, cinnamon, and cardamom are added, to help ward off insects and to give the candy a unique "Madagascar" like flavor. As with many of the different types of candies on the market today, the caramels vary greatly in taste. Some are very rich, some quite bitter, others quite sweet. There are even some that are smoked, giving the candy almost coffee like flavor.
Today, werther Original candies are no longer produced by hand, but instead are manufactured in cookie and biscuit shapes, on sticks, or in candy bars. These hard candy bars are placed in tins, packages, or boxes, and they often come in different flavors and colors, all of which are reminiscent of the original recipe. They are widely available at many retail candy outlets, in addition to being sold in stores and on the Internet.
