What Is Hi-Chew?

HI-CHEW is a popular candy made out of combining three distinct ingredients: a sweet, rich, ripe avocados, and a sweet, creamy sweetener. The result is ultra-soft, melt-in-the-mouth delicious - great for popping between bites or as an easy, quick snack between meals. In addition to being highly-soft and tasty, HI-CHEws are also remarkably rich, with a generally pleasant taste. It is this combination of sweet, rich and chocolate that make it such a popular choice for those people watching their weight (or that just want to indulge themselves). Although it is great for weight loss and pleasure, there are many more benefits to be had from this simple, yet delectable candy.

The exact composition of HI-CHEW varies between different manufacturers and flavors. One of the most common versions is a mixture of avocado and strawberry. Although most Japanese candy is made with fruit, some makers incorporate vegetable ingredients as well, including tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and bell pepper. While both avocado and strawberry are common ingredients in western countries, other countries also use components from foreign countries. For example, in Thailand, they often use coconut oil in their candy, while in western countries, they may choose natural ingredients.

The consistency and flavor of HI-CHEW are extremely adaptable. It can be blended to any consistency desired, and even stored in the freezer to maintain it's shape. This adaptation is especially useful for those Japanese who like to eat it in small portions, such as at a sitting or in a bag. Many westerners love to eat it as is, with its slightly bitter taste. For this reason, most of the candy produced in Japan is marketed towards the western market, and not towards the Japanese market because there are no artificially flavored ingredients.

The two main types of the Hi-Chew are the internal and external links. The inner link (which is the harder version) is made with the same fruits as the outer link (i.e., avocado and strawberry), and these two varieties are sometimes blended together. The external links contain either the aforementioned fruits or other exotic varieties. A few companies create candy products that do not contain any honey at all. They advertise their products as "green apple" or "berry fruit", or some variation thereof.

Because the Hi-Chew comes in such a variety of flavors, manufacturers have tried to come up with new flavors for the outside links as well, such as cherry blossom, lemon, mango, and various others. Most of these new flavors are only available on limited-edition promotions, and only for a limited period of time. This is how the Hi-Chew came to be, after all: in order to keep the manufacturers interested.

Since the Hi-Chew has become so popular among Americans, there have been attempts to create international variants of the candy that are available throughout the united states, and even in other countries. In 2021, the United States introduced a strawberry patch with the same product logo, but with an additional flavor. There are Hi-Chews candy bars that are available in the UK and other countries. There is even a Hi-Chew TV commercial that has run on numerous channels in the US and Canada. All of this has caused the number of consumers buying Hi-Chews to skyrocket.
