Who Invented Kit Kat?

Kit Kat

It's hard to think of any kind of snack that comes more often in children's books, movies, commercials, and comics than Kit Kat. Candy coated hearts, wafer cones, chocolate coins, ice cream fingers and biscotti have their place in children's hearts just as much as they do in those of adults. After all, who wants to be stuck with something that might as well be an ugly straw? There is, however, one food item that is often considered to be amongst Kit Kat's closest contenders, and that is Kit Kat bars.

Kit Kat candy bars have been a mainstay of the Japanese diet for a very long time. Originating from Japan in early 1935, these candy bars quickly became known to the public as a sweet finger treat. While most candy bars feature four long fingers, there are products which only feature one or two. And even when these limited edition versions of Kit Kat come to the U.S., they still retain their hold on the U.S. market because of their nostalgic appeal.

American manufacturers have taken note of this and have begun creating their own version of Kit Kat. These American Kit Kat Bars are made using the same type of chocolate as the original candy bar but have ingredients which give them a different flavor. Some of the additions include nuts, raisins and other items that American consumers are familiar with. They also include a number of artificial sweeteners to give them a sweeter taste and to make them more likely to slip into children's mouths.

Most American Kit Kat products are rectangular, similar to a pizza pan, but there are a few exceptions. Some feature round shapes, resembling little wafers, while others are in the shape of oblong rice cakes. These round-shaped Kit Kat wafers, which are approximately the size of a cookie cutter, can be filled with a mixture of milk, eggs and sugar or other sweetener. Alternately, the candy bar can contain pieces of fruit, nuts, raisins and whatever else may seem to appeal to the particular person who will be eating it.

In Canada, Kit Kat has also become something of a cultural icon. Although Kit Kat candy bars have been produced in Japan for several years, the product quickly took on a life of its own in the United States. Many restaurants began selling Kit Kat wafers at special events and on outdoor patios. As the demand grew for Kit Kat flavors in the United States, Kit Kat manufacturers decided to produce them here in the U.S., too, in order to meet the demand.

There is no doubt that the Candy Bars of Japan are delicious. But for many people in the United States, there is something about the taste of a candy bar that just tastes better. For this reason, manufacturers of Kit Kat candy bars have taken great pains to create candy bars that appeal to the American consumer. Candy manufacturers have even produced Kit Kat flavors using products found at a local grocery store! (Of course, if you don't live near any grocery store, try candy bars that are manufactured exclusively for the Kit Kat industry - these candy bars are often very similar to their store brand counterparts.)
