Why Have Airheads?

Airheads is a very sweet, chewy, fudge-like gum made by Dutch Italians, Perfetti Van Melle of Erlanger, Kentucky. This candy is made by inserting a hollowed-out balloon of wax on the top of an airhead. When the candy is melted and turned into a liquid, it becomes a gooey treat that kids love. There are three main manufacturers of this gum: Shea Communications, South Fork Products and Unilever. There are also other companies that make similar candies, such as Reese's Nutrageous and Krackel's Lucky Charms.

AIRHEADS

A lot of parents think that Airheads are safe for their children to chew on because the gums are so small. However, studies have shown that airheads, even when they are melted, can still be harmful to your child's mouth. Airheads can easily enter the respiratory system through the mouth, causing long term damage. It can irritate or burn the lining of the mouth, esophagus, throat, or tongue. Children who chew on airheads might have their teeth and gums damaged, which can eventually lead to tooth decay and cavities. Parents might find it useful to keep their children away from these candy products, especially if they like to chew on anything with a hard exterior.

The good news is that if your child does accidentally swallow a piece of gum, he won't be seriously injured. Children can choke on gum if they're not given enough water to drink when they first bring it in, and some people have had problems with certain brands of this gum being too powerful. However, if your child accidentally swallows an Airheads product, he should be taken immediately to the hospital, where an emergency room doctor will be able to determine the severity of his condition and give him the proper treatment.

If you've ever seen a gumball, you know that a tiny ball of gum can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. Airheads are similar, except they come packed with a tiny amount of plastic, and are usually between one and two millimeters in size. While this may seem harmless, it can become hazardous if the product is swallowed. Because airheads don't have any chewing surface, they can be a choking hazard for small children. If your child accidentally consumes any type of airhead, he may vomit or suffer from stomach pain or bronchial irritation.

While most airheads are safe when they are swallowed whole, this isn't always the case. Airheads that is unbreakable, but are lodged in the upper reaches of the throat can break open and become lodged in the windpipe, causing a choking or breathing difficulty. Smaller airheads that are lodged in the tonsils can also cause a serious problem if they block the airway. If you've had any type of dental work done recently, you should definitely notify your dentist that you have any airheads lodged in the back of the throat or mouth.

There are different methods for ridding a gum or an airhead of its contents. If you've swallowed some gum and are currently feeling fine, bite the side of the gum and dislodge it. You may also try to suck on the gum, or blow it out if you feel uncomfortable. If your child is uncomfortable with trying to remove an airhead, you may want to contact your dentist.
